Special Session Pay Raise Excludes Support Staff

The Special Session is underway. The proposed legislation gives a pay raise to correctional officers but excludes increases for support staff. As members of Local 2055, we understand this proposal isn’t fair and we stand united for across-the-board pay raises for ALL employees of the West Virginia Division of Corrections. (WVDOC)

Non-uniform staff in West Virginia are required to work post. They help keep our prisons and jails running. Currently, there are 2,300 unfilled vacancies statewide. Over 300 of those vacancies include non-uniform personnel. Both uniform and non-uniform staff need a pay raise to solve West Virginia’s staffing crisis.

What the proposed bills (Senate Bill 1003, 1004, 1005 / House Bill 103, 104, 105) include:

• Raises for correctional officers, with the most significant raises going to CO1, CO2, and CO3 positions.

• Funding to provide additional incentives (locality pay) in high vacancy areas.

• Yearly “step” pay raise for all correctional officers.

• One-time retention bonus of $2,000 to all correctional officers after one-year employment with WVDOC.

• One-time retention bonus of 5% (average) to all non-uniform employees (support staff).
